The Dreamer

I wish there were some way to wash away the guilt.

A Wife’s Warning on the Threshold of Judgment

A warning delivered in a dream.
A silence that sealed a death.

In The Dreamer, the wife of Pontius Pilate tells the story of the day when innocence was condemned, not by truth, but by fear and the voice of the crowd.

Her words unfold from the shadows of power, revealing conscience, regret, and the unbearable weight of knowing what is right… and being unable to stop what is wrong.

The Weight of Guilt

“I wish there were some way to wash away the guilt.”
– Pilate’s wife

Every human story reaches a moment when truth becomes clear.
Not all of us are asked to commit evil, but all of us are tested by silence.

The Dreamer is not the story of power, but of conscience. It is the story of seeing innocence, naming it for what it is, and discovering that knowing the truth does not always grant the strength to change its course. Some guilt is born not from what we do, but from what we fail to prevent.

This story unfolds in the narrow space between awareness and action, where fear, position, and restraint collide with moral clarity. It asks us to confront an unsettling reality, that righteousness can be recognized and still be surrendered.

“Temptation is not always about choosing to do what is wrong.
Sometimes it is about choosing not to do what is right.”

“We often imagine temptation as a dramatic invitation to sin,
but more often it comes quietly, disguised as delay, hesitation, or the belief that someone else will act instead.”

– Steven James, Flirting with the Forbidden

Through the voice of the dreamer, this story reminds us that conscience cannot be silenced by ritual, washed away by water, or dismissed by reason. Once awakened, it lingers, asking whether there is grace enough to cleanse what fear allowed to happen.

The Dreamer is one of the stories inspired by Steven James’s book Flirting with the Forbidden: Finding Grace in a World of Temptation.

Through powerful storytelling, each narrative reimagines a defining biblical moment, inviting us to see familiar events through the eyes of those who recognized the truth and struggled with the cost of acting upon it.

With poetic honesty and emotional depth, Steven James explores how temptation often reveals itself through silence, hesitation, and the weight of a guilty conscience, reminding us that grace still speaks, even when regret cannot be undone.

Every story is a mirror.

Each of us has stood at a moment of knowing, when truth was clear and the cost of action felt heavy.

The Dreamer reminds us that conscience cannot be silenced, and that guilt cannot be washed away by our own hands.

And yet, even where regret lingers, grace still speaks.
